Start with the year and the denominator

The DPIIT–NCAER assessment puts India’s logistics costs at 7.97% of GDP for 2023–24, equivalent to ₹24.01 lakh crore. The government published this assessment in 2025. It is a national estimate for a defined financial year, not a forecast for 2026 or a price list for individual shipments.

The assessment matters because widely repeated estimates of 13–14% used different or partial evidence. Comparing those headlines as if they were a consistent before-and-after series can be misleading. For a business buyer, the useful starting point is a clearly defined baseline.

Performance and cost measure different things

India ranked 38th in the World Bank’s 2023 Logistics Performance Index. That index provides another perspective on trade logistics, including factors such as timeliness and tracking. A country ranking and a cost-to-GDP estimate answer different questions; neither tells you what a particular lane should cost.

Our practical takeaway: use national indicators to understand the wider environment, then make purchasing decisions with evidence from your own cargo and routes.

Build a lane-level view

For each recurring route, record the origin, destination, shipment size, dispatch frequency and delivery commitments. Separate the quoted freight charge from additional handling, storage, waiting and return costs. Keep the scope consistent when comparing providers.

Review service outcomes alongside cost. A cheaper movement that requires extra coordination or repeated delivery attempts may not support the operation you actually need. Ask which charges are included, which events trigger an additional charge, and what information must be available before dispatch. This is a planning framework, not a claim about any specific carrier’s performance.

Make the next review useful

Choose a manageable set of recurring lanes and review them with your logistics team. Identify where reliable data exists and where estimates are filling gaps. That makes the next conversation about routes, capacity and delivery schedules more concrete.

When approaching Gowtham Cargo, share your cargo details, pickup points, destinations and expected frequency. A useful quotation starts with a shared understanding of the work—not a national percentage applied to your business.
